“ESPAÑA TRAICIONADA: STALIN Y LA GUERRA CIVIL” Ronald Radosh, Mary R. Habeck, Grigory Sevostianov (eds.) Ed Planeta (Yale University)

Simplemente, apabullante.

No es un ensayo. No es, por supuesto, ficción. Es un conjunto de documentos originales desclasificados de los archivos del GRU, NKVD, Komintern, completados con  los correlativos interceptados por los sistemas de desencriptación de los Servicios Secretos Británicos entre 19 de julio de 1936 y el final de la guerra civil española. Material histórico en estado bruto. 

Los comentarios que se hacen, son marginales y explicativos del documento, traducido del ruso, inglés o francés normalmente.

Desfilan todos los personajes de este drama. Los relatores son André Marty, Ilya Eherenburg, V. Gorev, Antonov-Ovseenko, Ratner, Voroshilov, … y al fondo, la sombra ominosa de Josef Stalin, jugando su partida.

Esta serie de documentos me confirma en mi convicción que el mejor relato de la guerra civil es el de Hugh Thomas. Mejor que Payne y por supuesto infinitamente mejor que el tendencioso Preston. Y destierra al rango de basura la interpretación de Javier Tusell. Y tiene lógica en la medida que Thomas era miembro del Foreign Office y debía conocer las comunicaciones interceptadas a los soviéticos, que por fuerza debía mantener en secreto incluso en los años 70.

Otra parte que me llama la atención desde el principio, es la división del Frente Popular. El panorama que dibujan los enviados a España de la Komintern es de enfrentamiento completo para hacerse con los restos de la II República (ya destruida desde agosto del 36), donde los socialistas divididos en la rama sindical, que se acerca a los anarquistas a veces, se enfrentan a los socialistas “de derechas”, los anarquistas y el POUM que a veces hacen causa común sobre todo, si es para atacar a los comunistas; los republicanos de centro e izquierda son almas que vagan sin encontrar sitio, … y donde por cierto la opinión comunista sobre los nacionalistas vascos y catalanes da escalofríos.

En resumen, visto este libro, creo que Franco no ganó la guerra. La perdió el Frente Popular.

Pero, en fin, solo es una invitación a que lo lean mis amigos y que saquen sus propias conclusiones.

Simply breathtaking.

Not an essay. Neither, of course, fiction. It is a set of original documents, declassified files of the GRU, NKVD, Komintern, … complete with the correlative intercepted by British Secret Service decryption systems between July 19, 1936 and the end of the Spanish Civil War.

The comments made by authors are marginal, explaining the documents, all of them translated from Russian, English or French.

Parade all the characters in this drama. Rapporteurs are André Marty, Ilya Eherenburg, V. Gorev, Antonov-Ovseenko, Ratner, Voroshilov, ... and behind the scene, the ominous shadow of Josef Stalin, playing his game.

This book confirms me in my conviction that the best account about spanish civil war comes from Hugh Thomas. Better than Payne and of course infinitely better than the biased Preston. And banished to the rank of trash Javier Tusell´s interpretation. And it makes sense, as Thomas was a member of the Foreign Office and he was probably aware of intercepted communications to the Soviets, information that by force should be kept secret even in the 70´s.

Another part that strikes me from the beginning, is the division of the Popular Front. The picture drawn by agents at Spain, there´s a fight for the remains of the Second Republic (destroyed since August 36), where the Socialists are divided on the union branch, which is sometimes near the anarchists, the Socialists "right", the anarchists and the POUM sometimes make common cause especially if it is to attack the Communists, Left wing Republicans are wandering souls without a certain place ... and where indeed the communist party point of view about the Basque and Catalan nationalists is dreadful.

In short, after reading this book, I think that Franco didn´t win the war. The Popular Front lost it.

But in the end, it is only an invitation to my friends to read it and draw their own conclusions.
